Better xCloud Keyboard and Mouse Guide

Keyboard and mouse support depends on the client, browser, game and input mode. Use this guide to choose the native or Better xCloud input path and avoid conflicts with controllers or virtual devices.

01

How Better xCloud keyboard and mouse input works

Cloud gaming input is not identical to playing a local PC game. The browser must capture keyboard or pointer events, Better xCloud must expose the correct input mode and the game must accept that control method. A working keyboard in the browser does not prove that the streamed game will receive every key.

Start with the PC userscript route when keyboard and mouse are your main goal. Use a clean browser profile, close other remappers and test a supported game before changing stream settings.

Input support is game-dependent

Better xCloud can improve the client path, but it cannot make every console game behave like a native keyboard-and-mouse PC title.

02

Set up keyboard and mouse on PC

01

Install the PC userscript

Use the official Chromium userscript route and confirm that Better xCloud appears on Xbox Cloud Gaming before testing input.

02

Connect the mouse and keyboard first

Test both devices in another browser tab or application. A Bluetooth or USB problem should be fixed at the operating-system level before changing Better xCloud settings.

03

Use the Better xCloud input mode

Open the client or stream input controls and choose the keyboard/mouse option shown for your installation. Labels can change with releases, so compare the current upstream documentation if a control is missing.

04

Launch a game that accepts the input

Begin with a title known to respond to keyboard and mouse. Some games will still expect a controller even when the browser captures input correctly.

05

Check focus and pointer lock

Click the stream area, accept any browser pointer-lock request and keep the tab focused. Switching tabs or clicking a browser control can release the input capture.

03

Native input, virtual controller and remapper choices

PathUse it whenWatch for
Better xCloud keyboard & mouseThe client exposes the feature and the game accepts keyboard inputGame-specific support and browser focus
Native controllerThe game is designed for a gamepad or keyboard support is poorPairing, browser permissions and button mapping

External remapperYou need a custom mapping outside Better xCloudSecurity permissions and conflicts with other virtual devices
04

Fix common keyboard and mouse problems

Keys work outside the stream

Click the stream, check focus and pointer lock, then verify that the Better xCloud input mode is active.

Mouse is trapped or invisible

Release pointer lock with the browser shortcut, reload the page and test the game's own camera/input expectations.

Controller and keyboard fight

Disconnect or disable the virtual controller temporarily. Two active input layers can make the game switch modes or ignore events.

Only some games work

That can be expected. Record the game name and input behavior, then check the upstream project notes or issue tracker.

06

Test Better xCloud keyboard and mouse support safely

Use a repeatable test when checking Better xCloud keyboard and mouse input. First confirm that the operating system sees the keyboard and mouse, then open the PC browser with the userscript active and no external remapper running. Click the stream area, accept pointer capture if the browser requests it and test a small set of movement, camera, menu and pause actions before starting a long session.

If only one key fails, check the game's own control mapping before assuming the client is broken. If every key fails, check focus, the input mode and whether another tab or application has captured the keyboard. If the mouse moves but the camera does not, pointer lock or the game's input support may be the limiting layer.

  • Use one browser tab and one input method for the first test.
  • Keep the stream focused while testing camera and movement input.
  • Record whether menus, movement, camera and pause actions each work.
  • Test a second compatible game before adding a virtual controller.
  • Restore the known-good input path before changing video quality settings.
07

Game compatibility and fallback plan

Better xCloud keyboard and mouse features can improve the route between the browser and the cloud session, but the final decision still belongs to the game. Console-focused titles may display a controller layout, ignore pointer events or support only a limited keyboard set. This is why a game-specific result should be recorded separately from a client-wide result.

When native keyboard and mouse input is not accepted, a controller is usually the cleaner fallback. A virtual controller or external remapper can help a specific setup, but it adds another permission and device layer. Add it only after the physical keyboard, mouse and cloud session work independently, then document the mapping so you can remove it if latency or duplicate input appears.

Native path

Best when the game and Better xCloud client both expose keyboard and mouse input directly.

Controller fallback

Use a physical controller when the title expects a gamepad or pointer support is incomplete.

Virtual mapping

Reserve for setups that need it, and disable it during diagnosis to avoid duplicate devices.

FAQ

Better xCloud keyboard and mouse FAQ

Can I play every Xbox Cloud Gaming game with keyboard and mouse?

No. Keyboard and mouse support depends on the game and the client input path. Some games still require controller input.

Why does my keyboard work in the browser but not in the game?

The stream may not have focus, pointer lock may be inactive, or the game may reject keyboard input. Check the input mode and test a known compatible title.

Should I use a virtual controller?

Use it only when the game requires a controller and the virtual device is appropriate for your setup. Disable it while testing native keyboard/mouse input to avoid conflicts.

Why does mouse input add delay?

Pointer capture, browser load, network latency and remapping layers can all contribute. Test a clean browser profile and stable stream before adding another input layer.

Does Better xCloud keyboard and mouse work on Android?

Input options vary by Android device, browser/app route and game. The PC browser path is the clearest starting point for keyboard and mouse troubleshooting.

Where can I report a game-specific input issue?

Record the game, client, browser/device and exact input behavior, then use the official Better xCloud issue or discussion channels linked from the upstream documentation.

Why does Better xCloud keyboard and mouse work in menus but not in a game?

The game may require controller input, pointer lock may be inactive or the input mode may change after launch. Test the game's own controls and compare a second title before adding a remapper.

Should I change stream settings when keyboard input fails?

No. First check operating-system input, browser focus, Better xCloud input mode and game support. Resolution and bitrate do not make an unsupported keyboard route work.
